Pushing unhealthy food in economic downturn?

Just read an article from news.scotsman.com, claiming that supermarkets in UK are trying to push and sell more unhealthy food during credit crunch periods.

The article said that the National Consumer Council (NCC) in UK found in-store promotions for supermarkets contain over 54% of fatty and sugar foods, contradicting what the health suggestion from the government, which should only be about 7% of the items.

There are disagreements regarding the subjectivity or accuracy on the comparable figures.

Well, in Houston, I receive supermarkets' newspaper promotion every week. I have to say, though, they have been doing a pretty good job in balancing their promotional food items. There is always a section on produce, one on protein, some on carbonhydrates.

And more than often, there are promotions on some healthy snack food that make them very appealing and affordable comparing to any regular discount food.
