Healthy Food Snacks

As I find myself getting nearer and nearer to the 50-year mark, I think it is time that I start thinking more about healthy food snacks. As the half-century mark (boy that sounds terrible) approaches, the situation may seem dire but to tell you the truth, I feel terrific!

I do however know that even though I feel great and currently enjoy good health, the habits of years past might come back to haunt me physically. If I do not take steps now to deter future health issues it will be pretty much my own fault. After all I alone control what I put into my mouth to eat.

In years past I have not always had the best nutritional habits. I was on the road a lot traveling for work and more than once I ate a couple of king-sized candy bars from the gas station instead of planning out a meal or taking some time to find a healthier alternative.

Now that I am older and wiser (older anyway, I am still working on the wiser bit) I am trying to make better nutritional choices. I am opting for healthy food snacks instead of the sugary quick fixes.

This transition is not easy. I have found that like a lot of people I am addicted to sugar. There I said it I am a sugar addict. If you have ever tried to wean yourself away from using or consuming sugar I am sure you have found it difficult. It is hard to quit cold turkey.

I read somewhere that when your body is craving those sugary sweets that what you are really craving is natural sugar. Natural sugar can be found in natural foods such as fruits.

Fruits are my secret weapon to combat my sweet tooth. I must admit that an orange or banana isn’t quite the same thing as a peanut butter cup and although it is not as sweet it does help curb the sugar craving.

As time goes by and you have stopped eating refined sugar, food sources containing natural sugars will seem sweeter to you than they did before. Once you have reached this point I would try to add a whole grain snack bar to your healthy food snack arsenal. Be careful though make sure you read the ingredients. These whole grain bars will not spike your sugar levels and won’t leave you tired one hour later like sugar sweets do. They are also a good source of protein and fiber. Just make sure to read the label. Again you are responsible for what you eat not the marketing companies trying to sell all of the horrible products out there. Some Information About The Raw Food Detox Diet

Most of the information about the raw food detox diet can be found on the Internet or in published form in a book of the same name published by author Natalia Rose. This diet, as defined by Rose, consists of five levels of food with variations in the percentage of raw food that is consumed at each level. A dieter can enter the program at Level 5 which is the most lenient. In this phase, you eat approximately 3/4 of your food choices from raw foods. This level includes foods that are cooked in one meal each day. A typical choice is a vegetarian dish such as pasta. Level five allows moderate animal products which might be selected from fish, chicken or eggs, but goat cheese is the only dairy product permitted.

At the other end or the levels is Level 1. It is the most severe. It consists only of juices, raw vegetables and raw fruits until the evening meal. On most days the dinner meal is also a raw vegan repast, but salmon is permitted once per week.

The raw food diet is a totally different way of eating for most people. You may find that you can't progress to the more strict levels comfortably, but that's acceptable, since the program is meant to be used at your own comfort level. Because the body naturally cleanses and detoxifies itself over time, you will usually find that you feel better and lose weight at the same time, but it may be a more gentle pace than with other types of eating regimens.

Contrary to popular belief, you don't need to eat 100 percent raw foods in order to benefit from the diet. Keeping some cooked food helps to prevent detoxification that is overly rapid. Cooked foods are also helpful to maintain emotional satisfaction in the foods you eat. Getting bored with a meal choice too quickly will be detrimental in staying on the diet.

There are some disadvantages to the raw food diet. This is not a diet for those people who must eat out often, Meals are prepared fresh and from scratch in most instances. If you are sensitive to carbohydrates or to grains, the diet is not for you. The early phases of the diet include large amounts of grain and pasta. The raw food detox diet is healthy eating at its best, but it is not for everyone. You don't have to be a vegetarian or vegan to enjoy the diet, but it helps. I've been drinking skim for a long time to and now I really don't like the fat in the others, it's just too thick. There is enough fat in the foods most people eat every day that having fat in your beverage is unnecessary.

Switch to diet soda or cut out soda all together if you can. Let's say you drink 5-6 12 ounce cans a day, that can be anywhere between 500 and 700 calories in regular sodas. That is a large portion of your calories for the day, and it is all sugar. If you will cut out soda and you will see some weight lost.

Try eating salsa instead of other fatty dips or cream based spreads. Salsa is delicious and comes in about countless different varieties. Most types have no or little fat, low calories and contain vitamins. Next time you are at the store compare a container of french onion dip to a jar of salsa. Salsa is much better for you.

Deep frying foods can turn something healthy into something very bad for you. Take a chicken breast for example, naturally they are quite healthy, but all that oil used in frying just won't allow it. Instead of deep frying take that that same piece with some lemon juice, garlic, and black pepper, bake it and now it's still tasty as well as good for you.

If you buy canned produce make sure you read the label first. Many of the vegetables will have salt added to them and many of the fruits have additional sugar. When in doubt buy fresh or frozen produce. Frozen produce can be just as beneficial as fresh with the bonus of having a longer shelf life.
