Best weight loss foods

No food alone could ever cause us to lose weight, there is no such thing as the best single weight loss food. We all understand that weight loss is the result of the energy consumed from all various foods within the diet, and that a diet's total energy must be lower than the energy used by the body.

Some sites peddle the idea that certain foods are the best for weight loss because when these "special foods" are eaten they result in negative calories however, there is no hard scientific proof to support this theory. In fact the only reason some foods are considered the best for weight loss is because they help reduce the total energy consumption in some way. For example, some fruits are listed in the negative calories foods list and considered one of the best foods for losing weight but this is probably due to the fact that fruits are often very low in energy. If any low calorie food is replacing another food high in calories then it can be considered good for losing weight.

Some other foods that are considered helpful when losing weight are those high in fiber. The fiber helps fill up the stomach quicker causing the individual to eat less, thus less calories are consumed.

Foods that are low in fat are also believed to be the best for losing weight. Fat contains more than twice the amount of energy than carbohydrates or protein, so eating less fat naturally lowers calorie intake.

Foods that are nutritionally dense, especially from some of the B vitamins may help increase energy levels and give an individual more desire to exercise.

Many foods with a high water content are among some of the best foods to help lose weight. They are often low in calories plus increasing water intake has been shown to benefit weight loss. Water benefits weight loss

Fresh, natural produce are among the best foods for weight loss, they are often low in energy and low in sodium. A high sodium intake has been shown to cause slight water retention, thus gaining an extra few pounds of water weight. A low sodium diet can help rid the body of water retention.

Processed and convenient products loaded with refined sugar are NOT the best foods for losing weight. The sugar contributes to "empty calories" void of all nutrients.

All the best foods for weight loss should generally be....
Fresh natural food

Nutritionally dense

High in fiber

Low in calories

Low in fat

Low in refined sugars

Low in sodium

Many good weight loss foods may also contain...

Complex carbs

High quality protein

Fiber

High water content

Examples of some of the best foods for losing weight...

Fruit

Vegetables

Legumes

Wholegrain foods (muesli, oatmeal, wholemeal pasta, etc)

Baked potato

Boiled brown rice

Fresh fish

Giving our kitchens a low fat makeover

Committing to a low-fat lifestyle means making some changes in our kitchens. But what do we mean by a low-fat kitchen? Basically we mean replacing high-fat foods with low-fat foods. So yes, those double-stuff sandwich cookies should be tossed, along with that extra-butter popcorn. But don’t despair, there are so many low-fat products available these days, alternatives are pretty easy to find. So what should we choose and lose?

Choose:

Oils Olive oil, canola oil, nonstick cooking spray, safflower oil, flavored oils

Canned Fish Water-packed tuna, salmon and sardines

Canned Vegetables and Fruit Peas, carrots, corn, beets, mushrooms, asparagus; peaches, pineapple, pears - in light syrup

Canned Tomatoes Whole, diced or crushed tomatoes, tomato purees, tomato sauces (with no added salt)

Legumes and Grains Canned or dried black beans, pinto beans, chickpeas (Garbanzo beans), kidney beans, navy beans, black-eyed peas; rice, lentils, barley, couscous, quinoa, bulgur, kamut

Pasta Whole wheat spaghetti, penne, lasagna sheets and other noodles

Jars Anchovies, capers, pimientos, peppers, artichokes, pickles, sundried tomatoes, minced garlic

Soups and Stocks Low-fat, low-sodium canned soups and soup mixes; low-sodium, fat-free broths, bouillon cubes and stock concentrates

Flavorings Herbs, spices and seasonings; whole garlic, garlic paste, tomato paste, chili paste, bottled ginger, low-sodium Worcestershire sauce, soy sauces and bottled marinades

Dressings Vinegars, mustards, low-fat or fat-free salad dressings and mayonnaise

Breads and Cereals Whole grain breads, rolls and bagels; whole wheat flour; cereals such as oatmeal, bran flakes or low-fat granola

How to lose weight fast? Just eat more!

If you are too lazy to exercise or refuse to diet, I have good news for you. If you exercise or undergoing dieting but still finds that you did not lose much weight, you will love what I have to tell you.
If you managed to lose weight, after going through vigorous gym training or strict dieting, or both but gained back your lost weight, what I am going to share with you will definitely re-ignite your confidence in your weight loss target.

My method of lose weight fast is to eat food that boost your metabolism and burn more calories than the food you consumed. Such food is also known as ‘negative calorie food’. The beauty of eating these fat burning foods is that the more you eat, the more you lose weight.

Sound simple? Yes, but the challenge is to love them and eat them.

What I have come up is a list of fat burning food in different categories for your reference. I suggest you print them out and highlight your favourites. Your objective is simply to consume as many of these foods that you like.

Fruits

Apple, Apricot, Blackberry, Blueberry, Cherry, Cranberry, Grapefruit, Grape, Honeydew, Lemon, Lime, Mango, Nectarine, Orange, Papaya, Peach, Pear, Pineapple, Prune, Raspberry, Strawberry, Tangerine, Watermelon

Vegetables

Artichoke, Asparagus, Beet, Broccoli, Brussels sprout, Cabbage, Cantaloupe, Carrot, Cauliflower, Celery, Chives, Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant, Garlic, Green bean, Kale, Leek, Lettuce, Mushroom, Okra, Onion, Parsley, Pea, Pepper, Pumpkin, Radish, Red cabbage, Sauerkraut, Scallion, Soybean, Spinach, Squash, String bean, Tomato, Turnip, Zucchini

Meats

Cod, Crab, Flounder, Lobster

Dairy Products (Must be Low-Fat)

Milk, Yogurt, Cheese

Do not be surprised that I have included dairy products as fat burning food. As against normal belief, consuming low-fat milk or yogurt, or cheese will increase the intake of calcium which causes fat cells to produce less fat and assist the body to break down existing fat.

How do you incorporate consuming these foods into your daily diet? I have some pointers for you to consider. For salad, you can start with lettuce, add shredded carrots, cucumber slices, diced apples and pineapples. For snacks, you may want to replace your chocolate bar with an apple, or you can make sugarless Jell-O with prunes. Alternatively, you may want to have a solely fruit salad as snack and top up with a sugarless whipped cream (pre-placed in the fridge) and serve cold.

Be creative. Use fat burning vegetables to replace other types of food, and you may use garlic in your cooking and reduce the use of salt. Your food will taste nicer too.

Although I suggest you eat as much fat burning foods as you like, as these foods will help you lose weight and keep it off, however, never go for a crash negative calorie food only. You should increase eating these foods, but not to replace total diet with them.

A balanced lifestyle that combines eating the right foods and exercises will help you reaching your target weight quicker. Keep your list of fat burning foods as your secret weapon and by eating these negative calorie food daily, will help you to lose weight faster than you thought.

Food For Thought: Tea Is A Satisfying Part Of A Healthy Diet

(NC)—Tea news continues to stir the pot in Canada. Records show we drink as many as 7 billion cups of tea each year – and those who study it as a dietary factor are now telling us not to put on the brakes. Both black tea and green tea contain antioxidant plant compounds called flavonoids, which are thought to be important cancer fighting agents. This, combined with its potential benefits against heart disease – plus zero calories and comparatively low levels of caffeine – is a sound reason to treat oneself to one or more cups of tea every day.

And while those who drink the 7 billion cups don't seem to need advice, still connoisseurs insist on preparation precision to make the "tea treat" even better. Here, courtesy of the Tea Association of Canada, is a 5-step process for the perfect cup of tea:

Make A Perfect Cup of Tea

1. Start with fresh-drawn cold water and bring it to a rolling boil.

2. Warm the teapot to help keep your tea hot longer.

3. Use one teabag for each two cups of tea desired. Be sure to choose a quality blend.

4. When the water has boiled, take the warmed teapot to the kettle and pour over the teabags. Stir, cover and let steep for 3 to 5 minutes.

5. Remove teabags and pour.

And don't forget, you can get a perfect cup of tea when on the run too. In a restaurant, ask for your pot of boiling water with the "tea bag in". Always allow your tea, no matter where you are, to steep for at least three to five minutes. Indeed, continuously dunking the tea bag may increase the flavonoid content as much as five times.

Remember, in addition to antioxidant properties, tea is an all-natural beverage with no additives, artificial flavourings or colours. It has no calories when enjoyed without milk, sugar or honey. Here are a few innovative ways to include tea in your daily meals:

• At breakfast, discover how delicious a bran muffin can be with your favourite blend like Orange Pekoe, Earl Grey and English Breakfast and many more.

• At lunch, use tea to flavour dressings on fruit, green, and pasta salads.

• At dinner, use brewed tea as a marinade for chicken or fish and also to stir-fry vegetables. Try ice cream flavoured with a splash of tea.

• At snack time, discover how green tea is an ideal refresher.

The Most Nutritious And Tasty Diet Foods

When considering what to include in a weight loss diet, there are two factors that you should always consider early. The first is whether or not your chosen diet will be sufficiently nutritious to keep you healthy. The second is if the diet will be tasty enough to maintain your interest, rather than for you to opt out through boredom.

It is possible to address both of these concerns at the same time by considering health food vitamins, and in so doing you may be in for some pleasant surprises. Much will depend in your tastes in food, but with experimentation, you should be able to construct a diet, within the guidelines of your nutritionist and doctor, that is also interesting enough to enable you to not only stick to the diet but enjoy it also.

If you are able to end up with a diet that you can really enjoy, then there is a chance that it will become a lifelong habit. It is possible to make permanent changes; I know that from personal experience. Initially, it can be difficult to make drastic changes, but it can be done much easier if you are enjoying the food you are eating. In many cases, drastic changes may not even be needed, but that is something it is best to discuss with your doctor in relation to your own health and weight problem.

I have selected five of my best diet foods, health foods rich in vitamins and other nutrients, which will provide you with some of the most important nutrients to sustain you during your diet:

Tomatoes

I find tomatoes one of the most versatile and useful foods for cooking, and can be used to add interest to all sorts of meals, such as curries, casseroles and soups. Tomatoes go well with lean meats, or mixed with other vegetables, when used for cooking. They are also delicious raw, if you can find good tomatoes rather than the insipidly flavoured tomatoes you may find in the supermarket.

Tomatoes also happen to be one of the most valuable health foods, rich in lycopene, plus vitamins A and C. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant, which is why much scientific attention has been paid to tomatoes in recent years. Lycopene’s ability to neutralize free radicals that cause cell damage has been the centre of attention, due to the possible potential in cancer prevention.

Tomatoes also have one other special asset. That is, that the nutrients are not destroyed during cooking, and even processed tomato products such as tomato sauce or ketchup, and canned tomatoes, retain the nutritional benefits. Tomatoes are therefore my health food super hero.

Garlic

When it comes to making boring foods tasty, garlic is way up there amongst the best. Along with tomatoes, garlic is an important part of the Mediterranean Diet. Like tomatoes, it can be used with just about any other cooked food, so whatever your diet regime is, you should find you can utilize garlic widely to satisfy your palate.

Garlic has some important nutrients too, such as calcium, vitamin C and vitamin B6, phosphorus and selenium, plus antibiotic properties.

Basil

Basil is a humble and popular herb that can be used liberally to bring its distinctive flavour to other foods. What you may not realize is that basil also packs a punch when it comes to calcium, phosphorus, vitamin A and vitamin C. Also, basil is a good source of iron, potassium and magnesium, and carotenoids such as beta carotene.

How about tomato and basil soup, with a touch of garlic? A super combo of health foods that will fit into most diets.

Strawberries

The mention of strawberries seems like a self indulgence; their flavour to some can seem too good to be true (me included). Well, indulge, because the strawberry is a great health food too, with some nutrients you may not have anticipated. Strawberries contain Vitamin C, vitamin K and manganese, folic acid, potassium, riboflavin, vitamin B5, vitamin B6, copper, magnesium and omega-3 fatty acids.

Strawberries are best fresh and eaten on their own. (Please read carefully. I did not say strawberries should be eaten laced in sugar with a dollop of clotted cream.)

Spinach

Many may turn their noses up at the mention of spinach; I know I did as a child. However, once you discover its true flavour, spinach does make an excellent food as a side vegetable, in a soup or in a curry. All the old stories about the goodness of spinach were true, as it contains Vitamin C, iron, beta carotene and calcium., plus vitamins E and K, fibre, lutein and zeaxanthin (carotenoids).

Those are just a few ideas for healthy foods, rich in nutrients, that can add flavour and interest to your diet, as you set out to make a permanent lifestyle change to lose weight.

A Diet Primer For Health Food And Vitamins

Quite often, we want to eat healthier but don’t know exactly how to start. Sometimes food you think might be good may in fact not be right for you, and vice-versa. This article looks at some simple diet changes you can start to make right away that will improve your overall health.

Whole Wheat Products

One of the simplest changes you can make is to start eating more whole grain foods instead of those made with white processed flour. Why is this? The whole grain variety has retained more of the nutrients and it breaks down much more slowly in you body. This avoids sudden spikes in your blood sugar level, which can lead to diabetes in the long run.

Heart Healthy Foods

Heart disease is one of the biggest health problems we face. Frequently caused by blood clots in you arteries, this can be alleviated by eating some of the right foods. Try eating things like oatmeal, blueberries, and soy products like tofu. Even a daily glass of red wine or some dark chocolate has been found to be good for your heart.

Drink More Water

We’ve often been told we should drink 8 glasses of water each day, but how many of us actually do? Drinking water is a great way to help you lose weight. Water helps the body metabolize stored fat. Water is also great for your skin – it helps to keep it clear and healthy-looking. Start drinking more water today!

Eat More Vegetables

Common vegetables like carrots, broccoli and spinach contain carotenoids, which are thought to protect against cancer. Vegetables generally provide excellent health food and vitamins essential to your well-being. A simple way to increase your intake is to serve more than one vegetable with your meals.

Fruits Are Fine!

Like vegetables, fruit is an excellent source of vitamins and other nutrients. Eating fruit can help you lose weight and also prevent illness. Apples, bananas and melons are particularly good for you. Try introducing some of these fruits at meal times. Bananas go well with your cereal in the morning, and fruit in general can make a great dessert at the end of your meals.

Fish Is Good For You

Cold water fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines contain omega-3 fats. These fats are essential but they cannot be produced by the body, and must be obtained from foods. Fish is also a good source of protein low in calories and saturated fat. Try a tuna sandwich next time you have lunch!

Spare the Meat

Red meat like beef is very popular in many of our diets, and it is high in protein and essential amino acids. However it can contain a lot of saturated fat. This doesn’t mean we have to give up this summertime BBQ favorite. Simply look for the lean cuts and stay away from the fatty ones like rib-eye.

There is much more we could say on the topic of health food and vitamins. But just by following these simple suggestions you will be well on you way to a healthier diet. The many benefits you will see from increasing your intake of health food and vitamins include weight control, more energy and a reduced risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Food That Burn Fat

Food plays a vital role in the life of every human being. Eating the right food in the right quantities is the key to good health. A balanced diet will strengthen your immune system and provide energy to maintain the body cells and organs. Here comes the importance of burning excess fat and thereby shedding excess weight from our body. It is possible to purge the excess fat from the body with the help of some food items that are known as fat burning foods. The specialty of fat burning foods is that they burn more calories than amount of fat they contain. Many of these foods are also known as negative calorie foods and are natural plant products.

The role of fat burning foods in reducing excess weight makes them ideal for people of all ages as they stimulate metabolism and reduce localized fats. Burning more calories is indispensable for reducing excess fat from the body naturally. The best way you can do it is to make sure that you include enough of these natural fat burning agents in your daily diet. Many fruits and vegetables are having wonderful fat burning capabilities. Fruits like lemons, plums, apricot, strawberry, oranges, mango, watermelon, peaches etc. are very good examples. Vegetables of this category include cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, tomatoes, cucumbers, spinach, etc.

Green tea burners and diet supplements have been found to be very effective in lowering cholesterol so as to reduce the chances of stroke. By increasing the rate of calorie burning, green tea also helps in weight loss. It prevents teeth decay and soothes irritated skin. Researchers have identified the role of green tea in preventing cancer that it contains some anti-carcinogens.

A recent study reveals that dairy products including milk, cheese and yogurt are good fat burners. These products contain calcium that speeds up the breakdown of fat in fat cells. Drinking plenty of water every day will be helpful for the removal of toxins from the body. It also accelerates metabolism and boosts up the process of fat burning to a great extent.

It is important to include fat burning foods into your every day diet so that you can build a better and healthier lifestyle by eliminating excess fat from your body. Choose a few fat burning foods that suit your requirements and develop a reasonable eating plan that focuses on your personal needs. Try to include vegetables, fruits and cereals that are high in fiber like pears, apples, lima beans, sweet potatoes, barley, brown rice etc.

Health Food Supplement - Add Flax Seed To Your Diet And Enjoy The Benefits

What is flax seed?

First I will tell you what it can do. Number one, adding flax seed to your diet can fight cancer. It will help to regulate hormones and thus lower the risk of hormone sensitive cancers like prostate and breast cancer. Flax seed is grown in cold climates like Canada and the North Midwestern States. The cold weather allows the seeds to grow rich in omega-3 fatty acid. The omega-3 provides the core nutrients of the flax seed. The seeds are great sources of protein, fiber and lignans but the real health benefits come from the omega-3. A few of the tests that have been done with flax seed show increase in sensory perception. Several studies show that flax seed can be a cholesterol-lowering agent. Flax seed can also provide relief from constipation and can increase the performance of your digestive system.

How do you use it?

Flax seed is a small brown or golden seed that is about the size of two or three sesame seeds. Flax seed does have a harder texture so it needs to be ground up before consumption. Due to its high oil content it grinds easily and can be put on just about any food. Many people sprinkle it over salads or put in yogurt or your morning cereal. There are many great free recipes that are available to cook with flax seed. For the first time user of flax seed there are starter kits available that are priced low and you can usually get 3 pounds of flax seed, a how to book on how to include it into your diet and a flax seed grinder all for about $30. The flax seed has a rich nutty taste to it and if you use 100% certified organic flax seed the nutty taste is rich and can really taste good. It is commonly added to sports drinks and shakes.

Flax seed may be what your body is missing to have a complete healthy diet. The health benefits are endless and is very popular as a weight loss supplement.

Diet Delivery - What Is Diet Food Delivery & Is It Right For You?

Diet food delivery is the latest and fastest growing trend in the weight loss industry today. From Hollywood stars to power executives, everyone seems to be jumping on the bandwagon.

But is it right for you? Here are some quick facts about diet delivery to help you decide:

What Is It?

Diet delivery services prepare diet meals for you and ship them to your home either daily, weekly or monthly. Meals are prepared according to your preferences and then delivered to your door either fresh or frozen. It's like having your own personal dietitian and chef helping you lose weight.

What Kind of Meals Can You Choose From?

Different services offer you a variety of options. For example some services offers Zone meals, low carb, vegetarian, low fat, kosher or even diabetic friendly meals.

Some services ask you to fill out a profile and then tailor a specific menu to your personal goals, situation and lifestyle. Others allow you to choose meals from pre-set menu lists. Many meals are chef-prepared and have been created to be both delicious and low calorie.

How Does It Work?

Depending on the service you can get your meals delivered to your home once a month, once a week, or even daily. You can also have your meals shipped to your office.

You can choose to have breakfast, lunch and dinner delivered or just gourmet lunches and dinners. Many plans also let you include snacks.

Most diet food delivery services will let you choose your preferences online and then order. In a couple of business days you should receive your food for that week.

In general, meals come prepared with heating instructions on the packaging. In many cases you also get bonus gifts like free meals or weight loss instruction booklets and tools.

Will I Lose Weight?

Yes - if you follow your chosen program. Most services state that their clients lose from 2-5 pounds per week, depending on age, gender, level of activity, etc.

Recent studies show that people have more success losing weight with diet delivery than they do with traditional diets. This makes sense - when all of the work is done for you, it's easy to lose weight.

Plus with chef-prepared, gourmet meals you don't have that sense of deprivation that sabotages most dieting efforts. You also don't have the frustration of driving to the store, searching for the right food, going home and taking the time to prepare it yourself.

In most cases you just choose your meal from fridge, heat for 5-10 minutes and enjoy.

How Much Does It Cost?

These days, with larger services able to offer lower prices, you don't have to be a movie star to enjoy diet delivery. Plans start from under $20 a day (which is what many people spend on food anyway). You can even get gourmet plans which cater to specific needs or allergies for about $30-$35 a day.

Some plans offer discounts if you order monthly (vs. weekly) and some even offer free meals when you sign up.

Also, many delivery clients feel that the time they save every day by having their meals delivered more than pays for itself. Time is money after all!

Final Note:

Getting your diet meals prepared and sent to your door is possibly the easiest way to lose weight in a rushed, crazy-busy world.

If you've had problems losing weight in the past and you just don't have the time to spend preparing complicated recipes or shopping for diet food, diet delivery may be right for you. It's easy, affordable, delicious and it works.

One note of caution: do your homework before you decide on a diet food delivery service. There are several services out there - but they all offer unique options. By researching what's out there before you make a final decision, you can save money, find the best plan for you and really enjoy losing weight.

Slow Aging With A 50-70% Raw Food Diet!

Modern advertising is constantly pounding us with ads about how and where to eat. Or what we should be eating. Common sense tells us that a much of this “food” is unhealthy but it taste so good that you can’t resist. What is sure to eventually happen is a downward spiral of your physical health if you are not willing to change your diet.

As scientific research figure out what foods promote a strong and vibrant body, it is becoming clear that many of diseases that are connected to aging are the result of a poor diet. Eating a diet high in raw veggies and fruit would lower the risk of most of these diseases but are overlooked as refined sugar and starches are the preferred food of westerners. A diet abundant with raw food everyday will cleanse your body and began to normalize your body fat levels. By spending less energy on digestion, your body can detox properly and spend time repairing damaged cells.

The most important of the anti aging foods are the ones that are high in antioxidants. Free radicals are damaging to our bodies always being produced as a result of metabolism, so antioxidants are needed to remove the free radicals from the body before the particles can damage body cells. You should eat as much raw plant life as possible, particularly raw fruits, vegetables, and whole grains contain antioxidants. Eating raw nuts will introduce unheated vegetable oil to your body, which supplies lots of enzymes and antioxidants.

Eating 100% whole grains should be your focus because the body converts the sugar in these carbohydrate sources at a slow rate. The fiber from these grains can help you to quickly eliminate toxic waste from the body and the grains themselves are full of antioxidants much needed by the body. This is the type of diet consumed by our ancient ancestors, who stayed youthful and hard working into their senior years. Health food experts have claimed for decades about the benefits of a diet high in whole grains and the evidence is now overwhelming. Whole grains are the best way to get your daily supply of complex carbohydrates.

Proteins should come from beans, nuts, and seafood. Healthy fats include olive oil and, to a lesser extent, other vegetable oils. Try to avoid fat from land animals. I personally endorse a diet of 50-70% raw food, just to give you a way to fit some of your favorite foods into your new way of living. Most people come to enjoy eating these wholesome foods. And they are able to enjoy good health longer into their senior years. An anti aging diet would really go a long way toward feeling the way a person should as they age.

5 Ways To Get Faster Results From Your Raw Food Diet

When I first learned about the raw food diet, it took me years to figure out how to do it properly. Then it took me even more years - making mistakes and compromising my health - until I started experiencing the benefits I was looking for from the start!

Let's face it, if you're going to bother changing your diet at all, there's got to be a reason for doing it. I would bet you want to improve your health and energy, right?

But why take years to get those results, when you can get them in months or even weeks? Here are some of the things that I've found can help you get faster results from your raw food diet.

1. Incorporate Fitness

It's interesting to note that even though a person may be fit but unhealthy (think of all the athletes who died of a heart attack!), it's *not* possible to be healthy without being fit.

Until you reach the point where your body fat is at an optimal level and your fitness “above average”, you probably won't get all the results you're looking for even with an ideal diet.

Fit people not only digest better, the entire process of nutrition is improved with improved fitness. This means assimilation will be better, blood sugar will be more under control, and much more besides.

To start improving your fitness, you have to identify your areas of weakness and work on improving these first. We explain how to do this in the Perfect Health Program and we put it into action in our 30-Day Body Enlightenment System.

2. Address Emotional Issues

Just like fitness, your emotions are an integral part of your nutrition. You've probably had the experience of hearing a piece of bad news and suddenly losing your appetite. This shows that emotions are an integral part of how your body processes food. It's an essential part of your health.

Often people jump into a raw-food diet, hoping that it will help them “clear emotional problems”, when in fact it puts these problems right in their face and they can't deal with it!

Let's face the fact that most people eat for emotional reasons, most of the time. It's really easy to do so with heavily processed or fatty foods, because these foods literally “drug” us and “numb” our feelings.

With raw foods, it's harder to eat emotionally. That's why you don't see lonely overweight people eating buckets of apples to “comfort” their feelings. Instead, they do it with a pint of ice-cream!

Be aware and ready to feel and face your emotions. Equip yourself with whatever tools are necessary to get over emotional baggage - including self-improvement seminars, tapes, and group support.

3. Cleanse

One of the best ways to accelerate your health success is to go on some sort of cleanse, such as the Green Cleanse or the one included in the Body Enlightenment System.

A cleanse should be easy to do, while giving you results in terms of increased energy, weight *release* (if necessary), and increased vitality and health.

My favorite cleanses are:

- Green Cleanse: consuming only green smoothies and fruit for 5 to 10 days or longer.
- Fruit Cleanse: consuming only mono meals of fruit for 3 to 7 days or longer.
- Low Fat Cleanse: consuming only fruits and vegetables without any fat (avocados, oils, etc.) for 3 to 7 days or longer.

While it's possible to do a cleanse on your own, it's best if you have someone to coach and support you in the process.

4. Find Raw Friends

Feeling alone and isolated can kill your success with the raw diet! It's very important to find at least one “buddy” who can support and encourage you on this path.

Now with the Internet, it's possible to connect with more people than ever. In our different programs (such as the Body Enlightenment System), we have seen the value of offering phone coaching and support, as well as discussion forum support.

Connect with other raw-food enthusiasts using available resources, such as local potlucks, teleseminars and phone coaching, coaching programs and discussion forums.

5. Get a Coach and a System

Besides lack of social support, the reason why most people don't succeed with a raw-food program is that they don't have anybody coaching them personally and showing them a system that works for incorporating all of the different elements of a healthy lifestyle.

Unless you think you can do it on your own, you need someone to show you a system that works!

No matter what the coach and system you choose for yourself, you have to make sure that:

- You find a supportive and non-judgmental coaching environment, yet one that challenges you enough to keep improving.
- You have enough quality tools and easy-to-use systems to make progress with your health, fitness and diet.
- The support you get is *constant* or *daily*, not just occasional.
- The program or coach you choose has a track record of success and lots of experience in the field.

Make no mistake about it, you can either take 2 months to put all of the pieces of a healthy raw lifestyle together, or you can take 2 years or 20 years! Do yourself a favor and choose the shortest route to success.

Food Pyramid Can Help Structure A Low Cholesterol Diet

Are you ready to improve your heart health and lower your cholesterol level? Then it's time to starting thinking seriously about the foods you eat each day. If you're looking for a diet plan to help you structure your low cholesterol diet, the food pyramid is a great place to start.

The United States Department of Agriculture has refashioned the food pyramid of the past into the MyPyramid plan which considers age, gender and amount of physical activity you get each day. Still, this pyramid is a good way to know how much of each food group and what types of foods you need to eat each day to be at your healthiest.

One of the food groups included in a low cholesterol diet is made up of the grains you eat. You should make sure that you eat three ounces of grains each day. Make sure that at least half of this comes from whole grains. Whole grain products are those that contain the bran, germ and endosperm of the grain. The other form of grains are refined grains. The process of refining removes the grain and bran for a finer texture product, but also removes many of the nutritional benefits of grains.

Another food group that is important for good heart health is vegetables. You should eat 2-3 cups of vegetables depending on your gender and age. Be sure to include more dark green and orange vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, turnip greens, squash, sweet potatoes and pumpkins in your diet. Dried beans and peas are also an important part of a low cholesterol diet. Good choices include black beans, kidney beans, pinto beans and black-eyed peas.

Fruits are another good food choice when trying to lower your cholesterol. Again, depending on your age and gender, you should try to include 1&1/2 - 2 cups of fresh fruits in your diet each day. Good fruit choices for your low cholesterol diet include berries, melons, apples and juices made of 100 percent fruit juice.

The next food group is one that you should avoid, or eat only sparingly. These are the oils and fats, such as butter. Although we add these generously to our foods, it is healthier to skip them altogether. Most people will get the recommended amounts of oils from the foods they eat. Good sources of oils include fish, nuts and vegetable oils. You should only consume about 5-7 teaspoonfuls of oils each day. A final note, avoid oils that are solid at room temperature, such as butter, because they contain saturated fats. Eating a diet high in saturated fats can raise your cholesterol level and should not be included in your low cholesterol diet.

Dairy Products

Dairy products are an important addition to your diet because they give you your needed daily calcium which is good for strong bones. You should include 3 cups of milk, cheese or yogurt in your diet each day. For good heart health and for your low cholesterol diet, stick with low fat or reduced fat dairy products.

Meats are another food group where you should watch what you eat carefully when you are trying to eat a low cholesterol diet. You should include 5-6 ounces of meat in your diet each day. The best choices are fish, poultry, nuts and seeds. Eggs are also included in this group, but if you want to lower your cholesterol level; you should limit the number of egg yolks you eat to 1 - 2 weekly. You should also grill your meats instead of frying them.

If your goal is to lower your cholesterol, try using the government's food pyramid as a guide for a low cholesterol diet. Then make low fat or fat-free choices to help you meet your goal.

Put An End To Fast Food & Snacks In Your Diet

It hardly seems fair... it is so easy to gain weight and so very difficult to get rid of it.

Eating is one of the true pleasures in life. It's a social activity... it's a reason to gather with friends or family. And you can't just completely refrain from food... your body won't tolerate that maneuver and it's unhealthy to do so anyway.

Life is tough enough and nobody wants to give up the few pleasures in life that they truly enjoy; which is why so many people head further and further down the path to obesity without breaking the cycle.

Recent studies indicate that our body doesn't even respond to dieting the way it was once thought. When you deprive your body of food and nutrients, your body goes into a bit of a self defense mode. Your body can't discern between the lean times of a diet and being deprived.

Today your body is also up against a major onslaught of the widespread use of fast foods, soft drinks, and snacks. The make up of fast foods is such that merely one item off of many of menus is the caloric equivalent of an entire meal or more! And not only that, fast foods just leave your stomach screaming for more because they are the meal that doesn't fill you up. And to pile on even more... most people wash the junk food down with a soda that is nothing more than sugar flavored water. This is truly a vicious, unhealthy eating cycle... that coupled with a inactive lifestyle leads to massive storage piles of fat in your body.

Another threat to healthy eating habits are snacks. Snacks contain way too many empty calories that ultimately end up as fat. Between meal snacks should involve you buying some fruit to take with you... so when hunger strikes you have a healthy alternative to a bag of chips. The important point to remember here is that snacks equate to habits. For the vast majority of people battling their weight, they have trained their mind and body (habit)that they need a 'snack' between meals... your body doesn't... it is only responding to it's training. The good news is that just as habits can be developed they can be broken.

Again start by eating some fruit for your snacks and over time I'll guarantee you'll lose the craving for those vending machine treats.

How Important Is Diet Food For Weight Loss?

The weight of a person usually depends on the type and amount of food one eats. The most essential part of any weight loss program is to find the right diet food to help lose weight. There are many elements to be taken into account in considering diet food.

Nutritional Value
Amount Control
Calorie Density
Balanced Food

There are many diet programs that have created their own diet food products that are high in nutritional value and can be bought at grocery stores and nutritional centers. In case the dieter is confused in deciding which diet food to buy at the grocery store, these products offer an easy alternative method for them to continue to follow their diet.

Good diet foods include fruits, vegetables, fish, legumes, nuts, olive oil and grains. You can follow this diet for lifetime since they encourage healthy eating habits that can become a lifestyle for healthy weight loss. This also involves the burning of calories for effective weight loss.

Ensure that while you are on diet food, you eat the right balance of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats in every meal which will help you to achieve the best hormonal balance which would in turn help you to lose weight, revitalize yourself, avoid energy lag and achieve many more significant health benefits.

For diet foods that replace sugar with lower substitutes of calories, there is a controversy based on the possibility that the sugar substitutes that are used to replace sugar are themselves harmful. In many fat free and low fat foods, the fat is replaced with sugar, flour and other complete calorie ingredients and the reduction in calorific value is small.

A low carbohydrate diet is based on limiting the intake of carbohydrate. It is a long-term weight loss and maintenance program. It is found that many dieters limit their carbohydrate intake and find it very difficult to stick with the programs and end up quitting since the variety of diet foods is very restricted with the constraint on carbohydrates.

How To Create A Food Diet For Acid Reflux

Many know that acid reflux is caused when stomach acid rises up into the esophagus, and this is usually because the muscular ring connecting it to the stomach has weakened and doesn’t close fully. This happens for a few different reasons, and some of them are unavoidable. However, there are certain drinks and foods that will trigger excess acid production making matters much worse. Those who have occasional problems with heartburn pain know that it is usually food that triggers the event. Those with GERD also know that many foods give them problems every single day. So, as a form of treatment it can be really beneficial to come up with a personalized food diet for acid reflux to minimize symptoms.

There are some things that should never be eaten by those with acid reflux, and there are others that some suffering from this condition can tolerate once in a while, but the following are a guide to those foods not tolerated by most, but each person will be different.

Some of the biggest problem foods are citrus fruits like oranges and other related fruits such as tangerines and pineapple. Potatoes can also be problematic, and some experience reflux when eating grains that are commonly in pasta.

Meats can be a good option for those with GERD, but they should be in as natural form as possible. That means no preservatives.

Milk products can be a bit controversial and cause issues for some and not others. If you find they can bring on reflux symptoms then try switching to the low-fat versions. Salty treats like potato chips can be more trouble than they are worth, and fats are always an issue. Many sufferers also find that sweet desserts cause problems due to the high sugar and fat content.

There are some foods that are okay for some, but bother others. It will be a matter of trial and error to see if these will exacerbate your symptoms. These would include fruits like strawberries and blueberries.

Tuna is another option that some people tolerate well and hotdogs might be on the okay to have list as long as they are not packed full of preservatives and you go easy on the onions and mustard. When it comes to cheese, mozzarella can be okay along with some types of cheddar. Low fat dairy is generally all right for many, although you may find adopting a moderate approach to these foods the best way to go. Desserts that are low in sugar and fat can be okay as occasional treats when craving something sweet.

There are some great foods that almost everyone with acid reflux can handle rather well. These should be the largest part of someone’s diet. As a general rule bananas and apples don’t cause issues for most people, and beans and broccoli are always a great idea.

Fresh cuts of meats that have not been soaked with preservatives are a good idea, but go for the leaner cuts when possible. For other sources of protein, eggs and fish are tasty options. Sour cream and cream cheese are generally well tolerated, and most sufferers find they can have breads and cereals without any nasty side effects. Some of the best sweet items are jelly beans and anything that is low fat and lower in sugar.

It is important to remember that every case of acid reflux is different. What makes a great food diet for acid reflux for one person might not work as well for another - it’s a case of elimination and experimentation. These guidelines offer a great place to start and you can start to build your diet from these foundations.

Is Eating A Raw Food Diet Actually Healthy For You?

Whatever diet you choose to live by, the food you eat has to provide your body with the nourishment to properly balance your body's chemistry. If you have health challenges, are overweight or obese, chances are you are not in balance at all. The typical North American diet is woefully out of balance. Even what are commonly considered as healthy diets, such as low fat, vegetarien and vegan diets can be improperly balanced.

The good news is you can forget counting... cholesterol, calories, fat grams, carbohydrates, etc, if you eat a properly balanced diet. But, just what does a properly balanced diet consist of?

At this time, it is important to remember a quick lesson in chemistry. Many people know about acids. We used to often hear about acid rain and almost everyone knows that acids are dangerous. The opposite of acids are bases, or alkaloids. These alkaline substances will neutralize acids. In fact, if you mix an acid and a base of equal strength, you will get a new liquid that is close to being neutral. The way of measuring how acidic or alkaline a substance is a scale called pH.

It turns out that the body has a set level of pH that it likes to function in. Just as we all have a normal body temperature, we also have a normal pH for our tissues. Different tissues have different pH levels. One of the most important ones is the pH of your blood. The pH of your blood is slightly alkaline. The body will go to great lengths to keep that pH level fixed. It will do this at the expense of other tissues or systems.

The goal of any healthy eating regimen is to provide the body with the necessary building blocks in the proper pH such that the pH balance can be maintained easily. When this happens, the body will detoxify itself naturally. In addition, weight loss is a side effect of being properly balanced. When one is out of balance, or overly acidic, weight gain, chronic illness, allergies, cancer, heart disease and even diabetes can result. This chronic overacidity of the blood corrodes the tissues of the body. It can also be said that the main cause of all sickness and disease is the disruption of the balance in the body.

With that in mind, how does one get in balance?

In order to get in balance, one needs to consume about 80 percent of your diet as alkaline foods. Green leafy vegetables are a great example of alkaline foods. So are sprouts, broccoli and many other green vegetables. A great way to get started on this new way of life is to pick up a copy of "The pH Miracle" from your local or online bookstore. Inside you will learn how to jumpstart your way into a lifestyle of balanced eating that promotes long term health. In addition you will discover all the foods you should avoid and the ones that you can eat as much as you like. This book is written by Dr. Robert O. Young and his wife Shelley provides recipes in the book too. All in all, an alkaline way of life is both healthy and safe when done properly.

What The Food Industries Dare Not Tell You About Vegetarian Diet!

Let's face it: Healthy living healthy requires healthy diet.

Now, what constitutes a healthy diet?

You may agree or disagree, but it is proven that diet dominated mainly by fresh, all-natural vegetables and fruits are the healthiest.

Of late, more and more people have switched to vegetarian meals - as scientific research has shown the adverse effects of animal meat.

For example, it is proven that the most common cause of death in US is heart attack, and the risk of death from heart attack by average American is 50%, while the risk of death from heart attack by average American vegetarian is 15%; and only 4% recorded for an average American pure vegetarian.

This is because, as nutritionist explained, the high amount of animal fat present in meat, dairy and other animal products may be probable factors leading to increase of diabetes mellitus, obesity, colorectal cancer, high blood pressure and coronary artery disease, which are some how linked to heart diseases.

What the meat, dairy and egg industries don't tell us is, besides these diseases, the following are also commonly prevented, consistently improved, and sometimes, even cured by low-fat vegetarian diet:

1. Strokes and heart disease
2. Stomach and colon cancer
3. Gallstones
4. Hypertension
5. Endometrial cancer
6. Kidney disease & stones
7. Breast cancer, prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, cervical cancer and ovarian cancer
8. Hypoglycemia
9. Peptic ulcers
10. Constipation
11. Hiatal hernias
12. Diverticulosis
13. Salmonellosis
14. Trichinosis
15. Osteoporosis
16. Hemorrhoids
17. Asthma
18. Irritable colon syndrome

(Sources: The Shocking Truth And Statistic About Your Food!)

Therefore, if you want to avoid these diseases, follow as what nutritionist have long supported the health benefits of high intake of fruits and vegetables.

You maybe concern that vegetarian diet is insufficient in meeting the daily nutritional requirements.

This is not quite true...

Take for example, milk producers' original ad campaign slogan is "Everybody needs milk" which was rebutted by the Federal Trade Commission as "False, misleading and deceptive!" The milk producer had to revise their campaign slogan to "Milk has something for everybody."

Another case, males in US are conditioned to think food made from animal products as "manly". Unfortunately, comparing men who eat meats, cheese, eggs and milk everyday, to men who eat these food sparingly or none at all, their risk in contracting prostate cancer is 3.6 times higher!

What else does the food industry keep hidden from you?

According to Who Health Organization, the recommended percentage of daily calories to be derived from protein is 4.5%; while the USDA's Food and Nutrition Board and National Research Council recommended 6% and 8% respectively.

Guess what?

The percentage of calories as protein in wheat, broccoli and rice are 17%, 45% and 8% respectively. So, do you think that vegetarian diet does not give you enough of to meet the daily nutritional requirement?

If nutritional requirement is a concern, you can plan your meals to obtain the essential nutrients in replacing those gained from meat, fish and poultry. For example, you can consume diets consist mainly of fruits, vegetables, cereals and grains. In order to replace meat products, you can use nuts, lentils, eggs, peanut butter, dry beans, and peas.

If needed to, you may take vitamin and mineral supplements to ensure adequate intakes of nutrients that may only be obtained from food made from animal products.

So, for your own health, and better living - stop believing what the food industries has lied to you. And eat more vegetables, fruits, cereals and grains today!

Gaining Better Health Through A Raw Food Diet

Chances are that you've probably heard people talk about a raw food diet and how healthy it is for you, but did you ever wonder exactly what it is they're talking about? Perhaps you envisioned raw oysters and beef on your dinner table. That doesn't sound too appealing doesn't?

In fact, a raw food diet is simply eating food in its natural unprocessed state. You probably already are on part of a raw food diet. If you snack on fruits and vegetables without cooking them, then you've eaten raw food.

Raw food, or unprocessed food is much better for you because the act of processing the food strips it of a lot of its vital nutrients. You've probably heard that cooking vegetables can leach out a lot of the vitamins and it can also destroy the important food enzymes as well. Packaged foods, that you find in the grocery store like potato flakes to make mashed potatoes and other foods that have been processed in some way to make an easy package meal not only have little nutritional value, but your body simply isn't made to process these foods.

If you think about raw foods as being the natural foods the way that they come from the earth, then it makes sense that these are easier for our bodies to process as these of the foods are great ancestors ate and there really hasn't been that many generations since grocery stores, and therefore prepackaged foods, were invented.

Raw foods are packed full of vitamins, minerals and food enzymes. These food enzymes are important, although you don't hear a lot about them. One of the things they do is help you digest your food and getting enough enzymes can help your body with the digestion process which takes a lot of energy, and if your body is spending less energy on digestion it will have more energy for you to do the things you like. Did you ever wonder why you feel so tired after you eat a big meal of cooked foods? One of the reasons is because food enzymes are destroyed by cooking, so there are no enzymes to help your body digests that big meal you just ate.

People in a raw food diet eat about 75% of their food as raw and whole foods. This includes fruits, vegetables, sprouts, raw nuts, seaweed and other foods in their natural form.

Raw foods can be prepared in a couple of ways. One of the most popular is juicing. Many people go on a juice fast where all they do is drink the juice of raw organic fruits and vegetables. Even just drinking fresh juice in the morning can give your health a boost.

Another way that people eat raw foods is to use a food dehydrator. This takes all the moisture out of the fruits and vegetables so they can be easily stored for long periods of time without going bad. A food dehydrator uses hot air to dehydrate the food but it keeps the temperature under 116°F so that the vital food enzymes are not destroyed.

Of course, you can simply eat your fruits and vegetables the way nature intended picked straight from the tree. Nuts can be a great raw food that you eat for snacks as well, but be careful because most of the nuts you find in the grocery store are cooked. You need to make sure you get raw nuts which you probably will have to buy either online or from a health food store.

You don't have to all of a sudden start eating 75% of your foods as raw foods in order to enjoy the health benefits of the raw food diet. You can gradually increase the amount of raw foods you eat as time goes on and you will notice how much more energy you have and how healthy you feel. Remember, you are what you eat!

Diet Food Delivery - What To Know Before You Buy

So you've decided to lose weight the easy way - with a diet food delivery service. Diet delivery is fast becoming one of the most popular ways to lose weight.

It's easy, affordable and convenient. But there are so many services to choose from - which one is best for you?

This article will help you know what to look for when choosing your diet food delivery program so you can choose the best one for your lifestyle.

Key Factors When Choosing A Diet Delivery Service:

- Price

Prices range from $9 to $39.99 a day depending on what level of service and type of program you want.

Higher priced plans are usually gourmet meals, freshly prepared (not frozen) or highly specialized in some way (for example, diabetic-friendly).

Prices also vary based on whether or not you want a full plan (breakfast, lunch and dinner) or just lunch and dinner; and how many days of delivery you want (for example 5 or 7 days). Some meal delivery services quote you price per week or price per month.

Ways To Save - You can often get discounts by ordering by the month versus ordering by the week. Also, you can often get at least one free meal and up to an entire week of meals depending on which diet delivery program you choose.

- Type of Diet Meals

Many services are based on a popular program like the Zone or the Jorge Cruise's 3 Hour Diet at Home. Others are based on broad meal types like low-carb or diabetic friendly.

Some services will let you choose among different plans like low carb, low calorie, vegetarian or diabetic friendly.

Regardless of diet type, most programs are really based on low calorie, portion controlled meals designed to help you lose approximately 2-3 pounds per week.

- How Many Meals Per Day

In general most diet food delivery services offer you breakfast, lunch and dinner. Some however will only offer lunch and dinner.

Others will offer snacks as an added cost whereas other will offer snacks included. Be sure to factor this into your price comparisons depending on what you want.

- Fresh Vs. Frozen

Some plans offer you fresh food; some offer you frozen food and some offer you both. Frozen meals, in general, are more affordable than fresh.

To many people, frozen vs fresh really doesn't make a difference. However some people want fresh food made with no preservatives. These services tend to charge a bit more because of the extra work involved.

- Number of Days

While most diet food delivery programs offer a 7 day plan, others also give you the option of a 5 day plan (so you can take the weekend off).

This is a great convenience for those who want their meals delivered to their office during the week. In general you'll be paying less per week on a 5 day plan, however price per day on these plans is pretty much the same as a 7 day plan.

- Menu Variety

Although it's hard to get bored with these plans, there are some services that offer better menu variety than others.

For example, one service might offer a 4 week rotating menu. This means the menu changes every 4 weeks.

Other services may let you choose your menu from a larger selection of food allowing you to ensure you're getting food you love.

Also, if you find you don't like what's on the menu, many programs will let you substitute a different meal for a small charge.

- Support

This may not be a feature that you need, however some people do like extra support while losing weight. You might get access to weight loss tools like chat rooms, e-mail support, message boards, dietitian advice, free articles etc.

If weight loss support is important to you, make sure you check out the options before you choose your diet food delivery service.

- Commitment

Some plans do require you to sign a contract for a certain length of time. The most popular time commitment is 1 month which really isn't asking a lot. After a month you'll know for sure if the program is right for you.

If a service asks you for a longer commitment than that, be cautious. Some services don't require you to order 1 month at a time however you'll probably get a discount if you do.

Conclusion:

Now you know the main features to consider when choosing a diet food delivery service. When you consider these features in light of your preferences and lifestyle, it shouldn't be hard to decide on the best service for you!

What Can Be Included In A Candida Food Diet?

So, just what are the good Candida food groups, which will provide me with the essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals and will help to prevent the infection from becoming much worse?

Luckily there are a large number of different foods you can consume to help the body combat a candida infection. These foods will also help in the long term to keep the Candida suppressed and so reduce the chances of you suffering from a further infection in the future.

However, a good diet alone may not be enough to relieve a Candida infection, especially if it has been left untreated for a while. So, it is important to visit the doctor for a proper diagnosis, as there are a number of conditions that have similar symptoms to a candida overgrowth.

Once diagnosed, the doctor will normally prescribe anti-fungal medication, and also may recommend a change in diet and some lifestyle changes.

An anti candida diet is one that restricts the foods that “feed” the candida and provide an environment within the body for it to thrive. It should also help by giving the body the necessary nutrients to boost the immune system and friendly bacteria numbers so that the body can regain balance.

Whilst there are number of acceptable foods that can be included in an anti candida diet, one of the best food types to include is fresh vegetables, preferably uncooked, or lightly cooked. It is also better to chose organic foods, as they are less likely to be covered in pesticides and other man made substances, which may upset the flora of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract further.

Ensure that the vegetables are well washed before consumption, as it is important that no mould, fungus or pesticides are consumed.

Also you can eat as much lean meat, poultry and fish that you like. However, avoid meets that have been processed, including smoked or cured meats. Again it is advisable that you look at eating organic meat, poultry or wild, deep-sea fish as opposed to farmed fish, as they are less likely to contain substances help the Candida thrives

Grain products such as oatmeal, oat bran, whole wheat, shredded wheat, brown rice, barley, millet and rice cakes are good to include in the diet. Not only are they nutritious but they also contain fiber as well as minerals in trace amounts which are good for your health and well being. Or you could try some of the grain alternatives, which you should easily be able to get from your local health food store such as quinoa, buckwheat or amaranth.

Although a number of foods are restricted by a candida diet, there are also many tasty alternatives available. The small list above gives an idea of which sort of foods that are acceptable, but it is important to have a list of the foods that should be restricted from the diet.

Continue reading to sign up for our free newsletter where you will discover natural methods to relieve candida and find out which foods to avoid in your diet to help relieve symptoms.

It is important to remember that following a candida food diet is only one part of the treatment for a candida infection, and so the approach being adopted should always be discussed with your doctor or dietician.

Ayurveda And The Raw Food Diet

The word, Ayurveda, is from the ancient Indian language, Sanskrit, and literally means "Knowledge of Life".

The Ayurvedic approach to life involves listening to and addressing the unique needs of your body, recognizing and balancing your mental and emotional states and deepening your connection with your spirit, your essential self.

The raw food diet is based around the principle that eating a diet high in raw food will normalise and alkalise your body. This, in turn, connects the mind with the body; thus, Ayurveda and the Raw Food diet are very similar.

This article will hopefully provide a brief guidance on how you could connect the two in a way that is optimal to your health.

In Ayurveda, the idea is that you eat according to your ‘dosha’; vata, pitta and kapha.

Vata is composed of the elements of air and ether

Pitta is composed of the elements of fire and water

Kapha is composed of the elements of water and earth

Vata types are generally thin and find it hard to gain weight. Vatas need to get sufficient rest and not overdo things, as they can tire easily.

Pitta types are generally medium sized and well proportioned. They also tend to be intelligent, with a sharp wit.

Kapha types tend to have sturdy, heavy frames. They are prone to gain weight easily. They often tend to have a positive outlook on life.

So, what does this mean, and how does it apply to you?

In Ayurveda, it is believed that each person is governed by one dominant dosha and you should eat according to that dosha. However, this article is concerned with Ayurveda and Raw Food, so I will only mention the foods that coincide with both these diets.

Vata

Balances: Sweet fruits, apricots, avocado, bananas, berries, grapes, melons, asparagus, beets, cucumber, garlic, radishes, zucchini.

Aggravates: Dried fruits, apples, cranberries, pears, watermelons, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, raw onions.

Pitta

Balances: Sweet fruits, avocado, coconut, figs, mango, prunes, sweet and bitter vegetables, cabbage, cucumber, okra, potatoes.

Aggravates: Sour fruits, berries, bananas, plums, oranges, lemon, pungent vegetables, garlic, onions.

Kapha

Balances: Apples, apricots, berries, cherries, cranberries, mangos, peaches, pungent and bitter vegetables, broccoli, celery, garlic, onion.

Aggravates: Sweet and sour fruits, bananas, coconut, melons, papaya, sweet and juicy vegetables, potatoes, tomatoes.

There are many suggestions in Ayurveda, which are very easily translated to a Raw Food Diet.
Such suggestions are:

Eat mainly seasonal fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and grains
Eat according to your constitution, or dosha
Fast for one day every two weeks
Establish a regular eating routine
Eliminate or limit caffeinated, carbonated and alcoholic beverages from your life
Drink herbal tea, fruit and vegetable juices

A Salad Is A Perfect Diet Food, Right?

It depends.

Are you having a salad or a tossed meal?

Does the salad dressing you’re using have a lot of calories in it, and are you using so much of it on your salad that you have the caloric equivalent of a McDonald’s burger on your salad in dressing alone?

Many people think that if they are having a salad for lunch or dinner, or even breakfast – that they are having a healthy meal. And yes, a salad can be a very healthy food choice. It can also be just as bad of a food choice as a fast food burger and fries depending on what is put on that salad.

Here’s an example of a salad a friend of mine who was dieting recently made for herself when we were having lunch at a restaurant with a salad bar. I watched her make a huge salad and this is what it contained:
• Iceberg lettuce
• Shredded carrots
• Tomatoes
• Cucumbers
• Hard boiled egg
• Diced ham
• Diced turkey
• Diced salami
• Bacon bits
• Shredded cheddar cheese
• Shredded Parmesan cheese
• Croutons
• Sunflower Seeds
• Regular ranch dressing – lots of it
• On the side of the salad but on the same plate she piled servings of potato salad, pasta salad, and cottage cheese.

I think I remembered all the ingredients. I may have forgotten one two, but I’m pretty close to having them all. I remembered her salad because she talked about her diet a lot during lunch and was so proud of herself for not ordering the hamburger she really wanted and instead having the salad. When I pointed out that the hamburger would have been less calories, she laughed at me. I think she thought I was joking but I wasn’t.

My friend did not have a salad. By the time she finished making her salad it was hard to see the lettuce. She had a tossed meal. And she had several high fat items in that salad like the processed deli meats, the cheddar cheese, and the bacon bits.

On the other hand, a salad can be a very healthful choice. Some good choices are:
• Dark leafy greens although iceberg is okay too
• Raw vegetables like tomatoes, broccoli, mushrooms, carrots, cauliflower, cucumber, green pepper (or any other color pepper), celery, radishes, and onions
• A low fat or vinaigrette dressing (raspberry vinaigrette has big flavor without having a lot of calories)

A salad can be whatever you want it to be. But a salad piled high with high calorie and high fat foods in a not the perfect diet food. In fact, what it might be is the perfect diet wrecking food because it fools people into thinking they are eating a low calorie meal when they aren’t.

Improving Your Diet Through Better Food Choices

With fast food on every corner, convenience stores popping up everywhere, and fewer and fewer fresh food stands, it is no wonder there is much need in America to improve diet and nutrition. However, it is becoming more and more difficult. Do not be discouraged if you see the road of needed change in front of you because you can take small steps to improve your diet. While going from a fast-food, junk-food, high-calorie diet to a healthy diet isn't easy, it is possible and worth it.

Here are some easy ways to take the first steps to improve diet.

Start your morning out right, and stick with it throughout the day. Instead of going for the sugared cereal, eat a whole grain cereal. Instead of a Pop Tart, grab some whole wheat toast. Neither of these things takes more time than the other, and each is a much healthier option.

It is easy to eat right when the right foods are in front of you, so once a week take the time to whip up a batch of bran muffins, cut up some fresh vegetables or fruit, and have them on hand and ready when you are on a hurry or want a fast snack. If you have some healthy options on hand you won't be tempted to eat the unhealthy options like the cream cheese loaded bagels or pastries.

Also, if you work in an office and find yourself going out for lunch every day, an easy alternative would be to make extras of your dinner, and try taking that as your lunch two days per week rather than going to fast-food restaurants. This will not only improve your diet, but it will save you money too.

Choose the healthier options. For example, when making a sandwich, use whole grain breads, lean meats and lots of tomatoes, onions, lettuce, avocado or other sandwich vegetables. Then, lay off or go light on the mayonnaise.

If you happen to be away from home and need a snack and have nothing with you, then when you are standing in front of the vending machine, choose a package of mixed nuts instead of a candy bar.

If convenience is an issue, then simply buy prewashed and prepackaged salad ingredients so that you can make salads quickly and easily. Salads are an easy way to add vegetables to your diet and they take up space in your stomach so that you can feel satisfied with a smaller entree.

Drink more water. Carry a water bottle or at least replace one cup of coffee or bottle of soda with water. Also add other healthy beverages to your life. Drink a Zija, which is packed full or vitamins and nutrients, instead of a soda when you need a convenient and refreshing drink. It will give you natural energy and endurance rather than a sugar high that when it wears off leaves you feeling sluggish and tired.

Don't go grocery shopping when you are hungry. An empty stomach makes all the junk food more tempting.

Get more of the essential amino acids and essential fatty acids. Eat fish or buy some flax seed oil to drizzle on sandwiches, vegetables or salads. Or eat plenty of leafy greens, or drink a can of Zija daily.

If you must eat at a fast food restaurant, choose a small salad instead of french fries, or at least ask for your fries without salt. Dab the excess grease and oil off of fries, pizza, and other foods.

If you have to have your snacks like potato chips or corn chips, then try the baked variety. They are better than fried chips.

Basically there are some very simple ways to improve diet without making your life any harder. By approaching diet improvement this way you are more likely to succeed than if you just try to jump in and eliminate the unhealthy foods you eat all together and right away. Cold turkey works for some, but for most the step by step approach is best.

What Is Raw Food Diet?

Eating a raw food diet has been around for many years, but only recently has it started to come into popular practice. There are many raw food recipe books on the market now, as well as raw food restaurants. Much information can be found online in the form of support groups, forums, and newsletters.

Many people are drawn to the raw food diet initially as a means of losing weight, since there are many testimonials to be found of amazing weight loss stories using the raw food diet. Others discover the raw food movement while searching for alternative cures for chronic or fatal diseases such as cancer. There are also many testimonies to be found claiming the raw food diet cured various illnesses.

In any case, one soon discovers that this is not a new fad diet. Eating raw food has been practiced since ancient times and in fact was probably man’s initial diet. The raw food diet is more of a lifestyle change to a healthier more natural way of eating that supports the body.

The raw food diet is based on eating raw vegan food. This includes such foods as raw fruits and raw vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Raw foodists believe that the more raw food in the diet, the healthier it is, so some eat a 100% raw diet.

It can be extremely difficult for most people to stick to a 100% raw diet so various types of raw foodism have developed. The living foodists eat foods that are alive and full of enzymes such as sprouted seeds and sprouted nuts. Juicarians take their raw food in the form of fresh raw juices.

A small minority of raw foodists go as far as to eat raw meat and raw milk. This practice can be dangerous in today’s world however due to contamination concerns. And another small offshoot of raw foodists will not eat food that has come into contact with a machine at all including juicers, dehydrators, or blenders. Instead they choose their raw food in its natural state.

The underlying principle of raw foodism is the practice of eating living foods instead of dead processed food. Living foods are full of enzymes and thought to have more life force and be better for the body.

Some Food For Thought-Is Your Diet Killing You!

I must admit that I don't usually write articles with such a chilling headline, so I feel that I should give a little background on a relatively innocent experience which prompted me to write this piece.

I would also say quite candidly that there is nothing really new in the main context of it, in fact most probably, everyone is concious of these facts in some way or another.

What I really do wonder though, is just exactly how many of us are actually making any real attempt to seriously look after ourselves, healthwise that is!

I live in Central Scotland in the UK, and according to statistics, we have one of the highest mortality rates from such things as coronary heart disease, strokes, obesity, etc, etc, and I often wonder why this should be the case!

Of course many things are contributory factors to this, and I am no medical expert, but there is one very important factor involved which I have studied extensively, and that is diet!

In Scotland we are renowned for our love of deep-fried foods such as fish and chips, pies, takeaway meals, our alcohol consumption, and so on. Every region of the Western world has its favourite "goodies" I suspect, so I am sure that you get the picture.

I must hand it to our Health Authorities however, because for some considerable time now there has been an extensive and on-going campaign of Health Education, including some excellent TV and Radio ads, outdoor billboards, and similar such things.

It was one of the latter that really caught my eye recently, so much so, that I can't quite get the image out of my mind. It is a large billboard, which contains a graphic picture of a human heart with two giant grey hands sueezing the life out of it. Very very effective,(at least I thought so),my congratulations go to the person who devised it!

This was the spur that prompted this article, and as I said at the beginning, there is nothing really new in it, but I think it bears repeating nonetheless. Life is a precious gift, and although we are not immortal, there are many many things that we can do to prolong it, and preserve our health.

As far as diet is concerned therefore, here are some of the important ones again:-

Cut down on the fat,and cut down on the carbs.

You've heard the popular advice on weight loss diets. Cut thefat! Cut the carbs! Cut the calories! Eat a balanced diet! But how can you cut though all of the confusion, and eat a diet that is balanced and healthy. Not always easy is it! Here is some advice from nutritional science, which might help.

Cut down on the junk fats.

Most people do not need an ultra low fat diet, but most of us could improve our diet by cutting out the junk fats. These are processed fats, hydrogenated fats, polyunsaturated oils that have been heated, and fats that are combined with junk carbohydrates. Processed fats are those fats most likely to put on flab and clog your arteries. We do all know this don't we!

Cut down on the junk carbohydrates

The majority of people do not need an ultra low carb diet, but unfortunately, many people who do go on a low fat diet continue to eat highly processed foods. They switch from processed high-fat foods to processed low-fat foods, and then when the food manufacturers create low fat foods, they tend to replace the fat with junk carbs.

These can actually pile on the pounds, because basically junk carbs are low-fiber carbs, like sugar, fructose (and all the other *oses), flour, cornstarch, fruit juice, and such. Yes, fruit juice is a junk carb too you know!
After all, how much fiber is there in fruit juice. Virtually none, simply because it's yet another junk carb. You would be better to eat the whole fruit instead, with its fiber intact.

Cut down on the junk calories.

Most people do not need an ultra low calorie diet, but just think what your diet could be like if you dropped the processed fats and the low-fiber carbs. You would then be eating mainly natural proteins, with lots of vegetables plus whole fruits, and the odds would be that you would be eating far fewer calories as well. That's the kind of calorie cutting most of us should be doing!

Make every attempt to eat a balanced natural foods diet.

By natural foods, we mean those kinds of foods that would have been eaten by our hunter-gatherer ancestors. They would have had lots of whole vegetable foods giving them vitamins and fiber for instance, and also moderate to small portions of meats, fish, seafood, and other animal and protein foods. These they would have grilled, stewed or baked, not deep fried! They would also have eaten small portions of fresh whole fruit in season, which is the diet on which the human race evolved!

So the next time you're about to order a meal with fries and a sugary soda, stop and think about how it could be improved. Replace the fries with a salad for example, and the soda with a mineral water say. It would probably surprise you, how much significant progress you have already made towards a healthier balanced meal.

Just simple sensible changes can work wonders!

When you are at home, look for recipes that use whole fresh foods, with a minimum of processing. Try and make sure that your meals include natural unprocessed foods, with lots of healthy vegetables, both cooked, and raw when in salads. Avoid processed fats and processed low-fiber foods.

Here is a little simple menu that I often use and enjoy.

Grilled fish with steamed green beans and peppers. Large mixed salad, dressed with small amounts of olive oil and, vinegar or lemon juice. Then a fresh fruit platter to finish off! A healthy balanced diet can actually be that simple you know!

Life is there to be enjoyed, but moderation in all things is the watchword in my opinion. I do hope this article has given you some food for thought however!

Diet Food Doesn’t Have To Be Boring!

Not too long ago, my mother and I were talking about food and diets. "Your grandmother used to feed you pasta five nights a week," my mother insisted.

"She did not!" I exclaimed, stung. After all, I remembered my grandmother as a wonderfully varied cook who could make anything taste wonderful. She served all sorts of meals, not just pasta! There was spaghetti, of course - she was Italian, after all. But she also made Ziti with vegetables. And Linguine. And tuna casserole with. ..elbow macaroni. By the time I'd finished naming off a typical week's worth of menus, I had to concede my mother's point - but I made mine as well. "But... it didn't FEEL like we were eating pasta every night!"

There's a point to this story, I promise, and here it comes:

One of the biggest reasons that people slip off their diets and eating plans is BOREDOM.

It's very easy to look at the foods allowed on your diet and see it as restrictive and boring. Chicken four nights a week. Fish three times a week. Green leafy vegetables till they're coming out of your ears. Who wouldn't get bored?

The answer is - anyone with a good set of cookbooks and a healthy imagination. Perk up your cabinet with spices and fill your refrigerator with fresh fruits and vegetables, then look for novel ways to combine them.

Here are a handful of tips for non-boring, healthy, low-cal eating

1. Spice it up!

Spices are one of the quickest ways out of the diet doldrums. Rosemary and fennel with chicken, mint rubbed into pork, pepper and lemon mint on fresh fish - the 'blander' the food, the higher the effect of the spices.

2. Dress it up.

Fruit vinaigrette dressings make wonderful marinades for meats and dressings for warm or cold vegetables. Try broccoli drizzled with raspberry vinaigrette or cabbage spiced up with apple vinegar and pepper.

2. Herb-infused olive oils - tarragon, ginger, fennel and more.

3. My brother the chef gave me a set of three oils for Christmas one year and it completely changed the way I’ll cook forever!

4. Low sodium soy sauce is a great way to flavor up just about anything.

5. Fruit

The bitterness of dark leafy greens like spinach were practically designed to be eaten with mandarin oranges, raspberries or chunks of pineapple.

Food Or Diet?

Some people say that "there is no such thing as a "good food" or "bad food", just bad diets". Usually after that they say something about another kind of low-fat, balanced diet which will let you reach your 100' birthday in good health. Most of this "wonder diets" became sooner or later another dietetics mistake and are replaced by new ones, which, after some time, are also replaced, because of the new revelations in the dietetics. And so it goes on and on, making people who want to live healthy life more and more frustrated, but still believing that the most important thing is not what lands on their plate, but the amount of it. Today, when there are so many kinds of food on the market, we should not only care for the calories, but also look carefully at what we are actually eating.

Difference between organic, conventional and genetically modified food

We all know that organic food is healthy, conventional food is accessible and genetically modified food can be solution to the food problems around the world, but when asked for details only few people can answer precisely what this is all about. Organic food is produced using ecological methods of farming. That means no pesticides or fertilizers with synthetic ingredients for the plants and no growth hormones and antibiotics for the animals. When you buy certified organic food, you can be sure that all of the above won't land in your stomach and affect your organism. However because of the slower production process and lesser efficiency this kind of the food is more expensive and even if all the farms would start its production it wouldn't be enough to feed people all around the world. Conventional food is produced using almost all available technologies provided by the science, save genetic modifications. Still, because of the intense production process, many chemicals and medicines are involved to guarantee that crops or animals will grow at the appropriate rate. Some of these "stimulants" can be found in the final product which we buy and may affect our health (notably the growth hormones in meat). Anyway, conventional food can be found in almost every kitchen around the world and some of the scientists start to wonder how could we feel without this additional dose of antibiotics and artificial poisons which we involuntary eat. Genetically modified food is the most controversial. The process of growing it is similar to the conventional, the only difference is that in GM food a part of the DNA is transferred from another species in order to change its characteristics into desired one without some long-lasting and sometimes in vein inbreed process. All scientists working on GM food projects say that everything is under control, but a few accidents when transferred genes didn't behave as they predicted show us that it may not be as safe as they want. The real advantages and flaws of the GM food will be known only after long time, all we know today is based only on theory and laboratory tests, not the real life.
